“Pride of Malverne,” the marching band from Malverne High School, was one of six high school and college marching bands to be named the winners of Metallica’s “For Whom The Band Tolls” competition, the band announced on Monday, Jan. 8.
“For Whom The Band Tolls” was launched by Metallica in April 2023, challenging college and high school bands across the country to share their best performances using the band’s iconic repertoire of songs.
In all, over 450 submissions were sent in, with $200,000 set aside to give band instruments and equipment to the winners, split into sections according to school size and level.
For their entry, Pride of Malverne submitted a video of the band playing an arrangement of Metallica’s “Enter Sandman,” complete with colorful dreamy clouds that turn around to reveal gray and stormy pictures.
Pride of Malverne was selected as a finalist for their category (medium-sized high school) in early December 2023, along with just four other schools in that section.
Robert Trujillo, Metallica’s bassist, announced the winners - five in total - over a video posted to the band’s Facebook page.
Pride of Malverne tied with Boerne High School in Boerne, Texas - each winning $15,000 in instruments and equipment.
In a post celebrating its win, the Malverne marching band wrote, “So proud of the Pride of Malverne and the Malverne Community!”
